Structured Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all — so your level of care adjusts as you do.

HearthWell helps people and families struggling with substance use and mental health challenges by providing treatment programs that allow you to keep up with your everyday life and adjust as your needs change.

What We Offer

Care That Adjusts With You

Recovery isn’t a straight line, and the right amount of support can change from one month to the next. At HearthWell, you don’t get slotted into a single program and left there. You move along one connected path — Partial Hospitalization (PHP), Intensive Outpatient (IOP), and continuing outpatient care — and your level of care steps up or steps down based on a clinical assessment of what you need right now.

That means if you need more support, you get it. When you’re ready for more independence, you step down — without starting over, and without being discharged and sent to begin again somewhere else. One team. One plan. Care that keeps up with your progress.

Care You Can Trust, Delivered With Warmth

Choosing where to get help is a big decision — especially when you’re doing the research for someone you love. Here’s what stands behind our care:

  • A credentialed clinical team. You work alongside licensed, experienced clinicians who understand recovery and deliver evidence-based treatment.
  • Care matched to you. Every person begins with an individualized, confidential assessment, so treatment fits your needs — not a template.
  • In-person connection. We believe face-to-face support matters, especially in early recovery.
  • Rooted in the Seacoast. We serve people and families across Dover, Portsmouth, Rochester, and the greater Seacoast region of New Hampshire.
Meet Our Founder

Built by Someone Who Has Walked This Road

HearthWell was founded by Shawn Richardson, who brings roughly two decades of lived experience in the recovery community to this work. Over and over, Shawn saw the same pattern: people trying to rebuild their lives while juggling treatment, housing, relationships, work, and everyday recovery triggers all at once — often without the structured support to set them up for success. That background shapes everything here — a program built on the belief that people recover, that dignity matters, and that no one should have to navigate this alone.

Not Sure Where to Start? We’ll Help You Find Out.

Recovery doesn’t always come with a clear map. You don’t have to figure out what level of care you need before you call — that’s what our admissions team is here for, and you don’t have to sort it out alone.

Who PHP and IOP are designed for:

  • People who need structured clinical support and can take part in treatment during the day
  • People stepping down from a hospital or detox and continuing their recovery
  • People beginning outpatient treatment after an individualized assessment
  • People balancing treatment with work, family, and everyday life

Assessment

Confidential, no-pressure individual assessment.

Treatment Plan

Together, we find the right level of care for you.

Ongoing Support

Regular check-ins, with your care plan adjusted as needed.

If you need a different kind of care first, we’ll tell you honestly and help you find it. Some people need medical support through withdrawal, round-the-clock care, or emergency help before outpatient treatment is the right fit. We’ll provide referral guidance — you’ll never be left without a next step.

Does Insurance Cover Treatment at HearthWell?

Yes — we accept Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. Not sure if you’re covered? Our admissions team would be happy to assist in verifying your coverage over the phone. If you are not comfortable making the call please submit a contact form with your information for your benefits to be verified and a member of our team will reach out to you with more information. We do offer private pay rates as well for those who are seeking services without the support of insurances.
